Setting Up Mobile Broadband and GPS with the Connection Manager

Thank you for purchasing your Motion Computing Tablet with the mobile broadband and GPS module.

To use mobile broadband and GPS network connections with your Motion Computing Tablet, you use the Connection Manager application.

For some Motion Computing tablets, the Connection Manager is already installed on your computer. For others, you must download the Connection Manager from our corporate web site. When installed, the Motion Computing Connection Manager appears on the Windows Start menu, for example:



You must set up the Connection Manager before you can use your mobile broadband network or GPS capabilities. To do so, perform the following steps:

Step 1: Download the Connection Manager if it is not installed on your tablet.

Step 2: Start the Connection Manager.

Step 3: Set up mobile broadband if you have an account with a mobile broadband network.

Step 4: Set up GPS. You do not need a mobile broadband account to use the tablet's GPS feature.

Step One: Download and install the Motion Connection Manager

You must download the Motion Connection Manager if it does not appear from the Windows Start menu.

To download and install Motion Connection Manager

  1. Go to Motion support driver page: http://www.motioncomputing.com/support/driver_download.asp.
  2. Select your Motion Tablet PC model and operating system.
  3. From the Downloads tab, scroll to Motion Computing WWAN Software and select the latest version.
  4. Read the release notes and click download to save the Connection Manager application to the directory of your choice.
  5. Unzip the file to a location on your local drive.
  6. Double-click MotionCMSetupxxxx.msi and follow the prompts to install the Connection Manager application.


Step Two: Start the Connection Manager

You start the Connection Manager from the Windows Start menu.

To start the Connection Manager

  • Tap Start > All Programs > Motion Connection Manager > MotionCM.

The Connection Manager window opens and the icon and icon appear in the Windows notification area, for example:

Note: If you do not see the icon, click the arrow next to the notification area to view additional icons.


Step 3: Set up Connection Manager for mobile broadband

Before you can use the mobile broadband module installed on your tablet, you need to set up the Connection Manager with the information about your mobile broadband network carrier. To do so, refer to the instructions in the Connection Manager help.

To view mobile broadband set up instructions

  1. Open help by clicking the help icon at the bottom of the Connection Manager window:
  2. Select the topic, "Setting up mobile broadband:"

Step 4: Set GPS Connection Manager for GPS

The mobile broadband module comes with GPS capabilities which you can use with your preferred GPS applications, for example, navigation or mapping software. You enable and start GPS from the Connection Manager.

Note: You do not need a mobile broadband account nor a network connection to use GPS.

To set up GPS

  1. From the Connection Manager window, click the Help icon to open help.
  2. Select the help topic "Enabling mobile broadband with GPS adapter."
  3. Select the help topic, "Starting the GPS receiver."
