What’s new in this release?

There are many enhancements in both the Tablet PC Edition update and Service Pack 2 update.
Microsoft has announced the following new features in Tablet PC Edition:

  • Enhanced “ink to text” experience throughout Windows XP and in any Windows-compatible application makes the pen a mainstream input device. Inserting text is easier with the new Tablet PC Input Panel (TIP). Word and case recognition also has been improved. Developers and users even can add rules for how handwriting should be recognized in certain text fields (such as e-mail, addresses or URLs).
  • Integration in Office 2003 and the OneNote note-taking program enhances productivity by allowing users to easily insert text with the new TIP and annotate anywhere in Microsoft® Office Word 2003, Office Excel 2003 or the Office PowerPoint® 2003 presentation graphics program, and send handwritten e-mail in the Office Outlook® 2003 messaging and collaboration client. Using Office OneNote™ 2003 on the Tablet PC brings together ink, text and Web content all in one application.
  • New capabilities for developers make it easier to create powerful productivity applications. Developers can integrate pen and ink in Web-based line-of-business solutions. Companies such as SAP AG, FranklinCovey Co. and Corel Corp. are deeply integrating pen and ink in their applications. This support makes ink as natural to use as text or any other feature.

SP2 features Advanced Security Technologies that provide proactive protection against a wide variety of computing security risks.

  • Updated Windows Firewall that helps protect against many network-based attacks.
  • Pop-up blocking that gives you the option to block unwanted and annoying pop-ups.
  • Automatic update enhancements optimized for low bandwidth scenarios to more efficiently download updates.
  • Bluetooth update that lets you take advantage of the latest Bluetooth wireless devices.
  • New “Safe Attachment Service” that helps protect against viruses that spread through your e-mail and instant messaging.
  • Data Execution Protection. Reduces the risk of buffer overrun attacks by preventing the execution of code from data pages in virtual memory.

How do I recalibrate my Motion Digitizer Pen?

To open the calibration program: Tap on the Calibrate button in the Motion Dashboard or double-tap the Tablet and Pen Settings icon in the System Tray, and choose the Pen Options tab.

The first time you use your Motion Tablet PC, you should calibrate your pen for both portrait and landscape orientations. In just a few seconds, calibration ensures the accuracy of the pen and adjusts the digitizer's performance for different users. Be certain to hold the pen just as you would a normal writing pen when completing the calibration exercise.

If the onscreen pointer doesn't seem to line up with the tip of the pen-for example, because someone else has used your Motion Tablet PC and adjusted it for their own use, recalibrate it to your tapping patterns.

You should also recalibrate if you write with the opposite hand from the previous user
(right-handed writer to left-handed writer, for example).

The battery may be changed while the system is powered on, in Standby or Hibernate mode, even when the Tablet PC isn't connected to an AC power source. Use only batteries obtained from Motion Computing.

IMPORTANT:

  • If you choose Stand By, the unit is designed to maintain your system for up to 30 seconds while the battery is swapped. However, you may have less than 30 seconds to swap the battery because of the settings and the programs that you have running. You should save any data before putting the unit in Stand By to swap the battery.

  2. Tap Stand By.
  3. Wait until the system shuts down and all LEDs are off.

  2. Select the Hibernate tab and make sure Hibernate is Enabled (the default).
  3. Go to Start => Turn Off Computer.
  4. When the Turn Off Computer window appears, press the Shift key on your external keyboard or tap Shift on the Tablet PC Input Panel keyboard to select the option from Stand By to Hibernate.
  5. Tap Hibernate.
  6. Wait until the system shuts down and all LEDs are off.
