Issue / Question

This article describes how to use the Microsoft native Bluetooth management software rather than the WIDCOMM software that shipped with many M1400s.

Solution / Answer

If you are using the WIDCOMM Bluetooth Software that came with your M1400 and you update to Service Pack 2 for Windows XP, your Bluetooth software should continue to function normally.  If it does not, please call Motion support.  If you would prefer to use the Microsoft Bluetooth Software, please follow the steps below.

To install the Microsoft Bluetooth software:

Please note, if you did not install the WIDCOMM Bluetooth software before you ran the Service Pack 2 update, the Microsoft Bluetooth software will be automatically installed.  

If the WIDCOMM software is installed, follow these steps to install the Microsoft software:

1. Right-click on My Computer, in the Start menu, and choose Properties
2. On the Hardware tab, choose Device Manager
3. Expand the Bluetooth Devices entry
4. Right-click on Motion Computing USB Bluetooth Device and select Uninstall
5. Choose OK to confirm the device removal
6. Highlight the computer name and go to Action > Scan for hardware changes. Two entries will appear under Bluetooth Radios: Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator and Motion Computing USB Bluetooth Device
7. To permanently show the Microsoft Bluetooth icon in the system tray, go to Start > Control Panel and Switch to Classic View. Choose Bluetooth Devices. On the Options tab, check Show the Bluetooth icon in the notification area
8. To remove the WIDCOMM Bluetooth icon from the system tray, you must uninstall the WIDCOMM Bluetooth software. The Microsoft software will function correctly without uninstalling the WIDCOMM software.

To uninstall the WIDCOMM Bluetooth software:

1. Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs
2. Highlight the entry for WIDCOMM Bluetooth Software and choose Remove
3. In the Add or Remove Programs dialog box, choose Yes
4. In the Uninstalling Bluetooth Devices… dialog box, choose Cancel
5. Restart your computer

To install the WIDCOMM Bluetooth software:

1. To install the WIDCOMM Bluetooth software that shipped with your Motion M1400 Tablet PC, please refer to the Bluetooth Readme. Go to Start > All Programs > Motion Resources > Bluetooth > Bluetooth Readme
   
   Note: You may be presented with up to fourteen dialog boxes warning that the software has not passed Windows Logo testing. Select Continue Anyway to complete the installation.
2. A red Bluetooth icon will appear in the system tray after the WIDCOMM application software is installed.
3. Right-click on My Computer, in the Start menu, and choose Properties
4. On the Hardware tab, choose Device Manager
5. Expand the Bluetooth Devices entry
6. Right-click on Motion Computing USB Bluetooth Device and select Update Driver…
7. In the Hardware Update Wizard, select No, not this time, and choose Next
8. In the next window, select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced), and choose Next
9. In the next window, select Don’t search. I will choose the driver to install. Tap Next.
10. Select Have Disk…
11. Browse to C:\Windows\Motion\Bluetooth\btwusb
12. Select OK to Install from disk
13. A warning will appear that the driver is not digitally signed. Highlight the Motion Computing USB Bluetooth Device and select Next
14. Tap Finish
