Based on comprehensive understanding on how glass breaks, Corning created Gorilla glass to better survive the real world events that commonly cause glass failure such as accidental impacts, scratches, and abrasions. Designed specifically for mobile devices, Corning’s Gorilla glass improves screen durability without adding weight to the highly mobile tablet PCs. Motion’s C5 and F5 are the first rugged tablet PCs to feature Corning’s durable Gorilla™ glass.
Corning Gorilla glass is an environmentally friendly alkali-aluminosilicate
thin-sheet glass designed specifically to function as a cover glass for portable display devices. Its superior composition allows a deeper layer of chemical strengthening than is possible with other chemically strengthened glasses, giving it an increased ability to resist and withstand damage. Additionally, it remains strong over time, extending the life of the tablets while making accidental scratches and abrasions less visible and less likely to affect the user’s visual experience.
Gorilla Glass Features
A variety of features come together in Corning’s Gorilla glass to create a strong, damage-resistant glass that is ideal for tablet PCs, including:
Chemically strengthened to withstand high-volume user interaction and repetitive motion
Highly durable, scratch-resistant cover glass for increased mobile Tablet PCs lifespan
Adds protection without impacting pen response
Increased ability to resist and withstand damages compared to device without Gorilla glass
Scratches that may occur are less visible & less likely to affect the user’s visual experience
Retains its performance advantage even when used in thin form factors
Retains optical characteristics after extended use and abuse
Remains strong over time
Water, chemical and disinfectant resistant coating: easy to clean and remove dust, dirt, or other elements.
The Gorilla glass fusion forming technology is designed to provide durable glass and is ideal in rugged environments where high strength and damage resistance is required.
“Corning’s Gorilla glass was designed specifically for products like the Motion tablets, which are focused on durability, mobility and industry-leading displays that offer a bright viewing experience in a highly portable and durable design,” said James E. Hollis, commercial director, Corning Specialty Materials. “Additionally, since Gorilla glass is strong and also damage and scratch resistant, it further protects pen-input devices that are often exposed to elements such as water and dust.”
Gorilla Glass combined with Motion View Anywhere and the Hydis AFFS+ LED Backlight display provide superior viewability in outdoor and other harsh lighting environments.
