Motion Computing Spurs Tablet PC Software Development, Reaches Century Mark With ISV/IHV Partner Program

Austin, Texas, Oct. 11, 2004 – In its quest to advance tablet PC software applications and hardware accessories, Motion Computing has reached a milestone of 100 companies in its independent software vendor (ISV) and independent hardware vendor (IHV) partnership program.

Launched in April 2004, the ISV/IHV partnership program formalizes Motion’s efforts over the past two years to help hundreds of companies develop tablet PC-related products. The program is designed to accelerate the development and deployment of compelling tablet PC products that take advantage of Motion tablet PC hardware and the Microsoft® Windows® XP Tablet PC Edition operating system. With a dedicated ISV/IHV team, Motion works closely with its partners to provide a broad range of development, technical, sales and marketing support.

The program offers three levels of participation and support: silver, gold and platinum. To be eligible for silver status, ISVs and IHVs must offer or be developing a compelling ink-enabled software application or hardware product, especially in vertical markets such as field sales and service, education and healthcare. Gold and platinum partners, who receive increasing levels of support from Motion, must meet additional requirements, including market leadership, deployment size and technical integration level.

Silver partners comprise more than 75 percent of the program. Motion views its silver-level partners as key to fueling the continued growth of the slate tablet PC platform.

“Our ISV/IHV partners are some of the most innovative companies on the planet and recognize the possibilities of the tablet PC platform,” said David Altounian, Motion’s chief product officer. “Motion Computing will continue to work hand-in-hand with ISVs and IHVs to fulfill customer needs with tablet-based software and hardware. We look forward to working with the next 100 companies to encourage the development of even more compelling tablet PC products.”

From education and healthcare to field sales and service, Motion is supporting ISVs and IHVs to break new ground in computing. For instance, in education, Motion silver partner xThink Inc., based in Round Rock, Texas, extends the tablet PC’s pen-based technology into the world of math with xThink Calculator and MathJournal, enabling users to solve both simple and complex math problems electronically using their own handwriting.

“Motion Computing ‘gets’ the revolutionary potential of tablet PCs better than any tablet PC manufacturer we work with,” said Lothar Wenzel, chief executive officer of xThink. “Motion understands that tablets change how people relate to computers. That’s why xThink has a winning relationship with Motion. They provide a powerful, mobile tablet environment, and the Motion brand is the number one choice among our staff. xThink provides revolutionary math software to help Motion customers meet or exceed what they expect from their tablets.”

In healthcare, Motion silver partner MedSelfEd, Newton, Mass., recently developed PatientPad, a patient education application for the tablet PC. Using multimedia content with the tablet’s pen-based interface, PatientPad provides pre- and post-operative information for patients, and doctors can use it as a tool to obtain informed consent.

“The two aspects of the Motion partnership that MedSelfEd values most are Motion tablet evaluation units for potential customers, and the opportunity to meet and collaborate with other partners in the tablet PC space,” said John Samellas, chief executive officer of MedSelfEd. “For instance, Motion recently helped us put together a stellar team of five companies – all Motion partners – to bid on a large government contract, which would include PatientPad on Motion tablets.”

In field force automation, Motion silver partner Field2Base, Raleigh, N.C., introduced ConstructConnect, a tablet PC communications platform designed for use at any construction site. ConstructConnect digitizes any paper form or report and makes it available on a tablet PC, such as Motion’s clipboard-sized M1400 with View Anywhere™ indoor/outdoor display. From the field, users have immediate access to computer-aided designs, site plans, daily reports, material orders or other documents, and can make real-time updates.

Field2Base designed ConstructConnect for simplicity: Users see the software interface as a familiar yellow pad on the tablet, and the tablet provides a pen- and paper-like interface with handwritten annotation capability for any digital document.

"Motion’s partnership has helped Field2Base market our ConstructConnect product,” said Ed Holloway, president and chief technical officer of Field2Base. “Using ConstructConnect on a tablet PC gives our customers ‘walk around’ access to all necessary documents on a job site, which helps reduce delays in solving site issues, improve communications and automate reporting and site ordering functions. The Motion tablet’s power and mobility combined with our software provides a natural and easy-to-use tool, which is why most of our customers are using Motion tablets.”

Motion’s gold ISV partners include Active Ink Software, Agilix Labs, Alias, Criterion Corp., Design Universe, Ergotron, Mi-Co and Mindjet. For more information on Motion’s ISV/IHV partnership program, visit http://www.motioncomputing.com/partner/software.asp
